Outdoor Travel = More Glamping 🏕

2022 was IN-TENTS. According to Kampgrounds for America Inc (KOA), a record 58 million households across the US and Canada pitched tents or took a more glamorous experience through “glamping”. We don’t blame the “glampers” one bit, not having to fumble with the tent poles, sounds like a surefire way to enjoy every minute of the experience.

Bloomberg Reports Other Outdoor Travel Trends Include:

  • Nature breaks have worked their way into the vacation itinerary - not bathroom breaks 🚽 but intentional time in nature is now mainstream.

  • Campgrounds are scaling up to compete with resorts and vacation rentals (Airbnb, VRBO).

  • Travel industry continues to battle with its climate impacts and ability to positively impact its host communities and businesses.

  • Facilities to accommodate families are still a priority as the need to attract families and ingrain outdoor experience in the youth is crucial to future industry stability and growth.

  • Collaborative and shared-impact strategy is an important factor for the outdoor travel industry to succeed in 2023.

Airbnb, it’s more like Airbn-SKI ⛷

Last spring, Airbnb went through one of its biggest platform redesigns to improve the discovery and booking features. One of the additions was Airbnb Categories which allows users to “organize homes by what makes them unique, which helps people discover places they wouldn’t have otherwise found.” Some of these categories include amazing pools, national parks, surfing, lakefront, beach, and skiing. Many categories have an outdoor recreation inspiration with Airbnb having over 300,000 homes listed in the skiing category on the platform. This week Airbnb released a skiing-specific commercial to further push the outlet as one for an epic ski getaway.

The company also released a list of the Most wish-listed ski-in, ski-out listings” which have us drooling on our keyboards.

Top locations include:

  • Lac-Beauport, Canada

  • Gaular, Norway

  • Pelkosenniemi, Finland

  • Walden, CO, USA

  • Mordarka, Poland

  • Big Sky, MT, USA

  • Breckenridge, CO, USA

  • Basya, VA, USA

  • Running Springs, CA, USA

  • Elka Park, NY, USA

Time to hit the slopes…

Two (non-alcoholic beers) for the Trails

Athletic Brewing Company and Whoop team up to measure the effects of alcohol on sleep, recovery, and fitness. They have also collaborated on a product line for Whoop with all proceeds going to support Athletic Brewing Company’s Two for the Trails program which protects and restores local trails. Two for the Trails is named after one of Athletic Brewing Company’s fathers who always packed two beers for the trails to celebrate the time outdoors. Since the inception of the Two for the Trails program, Athletic Brewing Company has donated over $2 million to trail systems and projects throughout the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia. Whoop members have long documented the benefits of not drinking according to their Whoop Data.

Hockey the way it was meant to be played

Outside and in one of the most historic ballparks in the world. Alright, maybe not the last past, but that is exactly what the NHL did this year when it returned to Fenway Park in Boston, MA. This is the second time Fenway has played host to the Winter Classic, the first was in 2010. The 2022 installment of the NHL’s marquee mid-season event saw the Boston Bruins, host the Pittsburgh Penguins, where the Bs took home the 2-1 victory. Next year, the event will head west. The Seattle Kraken will host the Las Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Park on January 1, 2024.
