In the world of outdoor adventure, REI is a household name. Since its humble beginnings as a Seattle-based co-op in 1938, REI has scaled mountains ποΈ, transformed into a nationwide retailer, with over 179 locations in 42 states and the District of Columbia πͺ, and now caters to every outdoor enthusiast's whim. But lately, there's been a new adventure on the horizon: a labor movement that's spreading faster than a wildfire in dry timber.
Back in 2022, REI workers in Manhattan decided they'd had enough of s'mores and campfire songs. They rolled up their sleeves, voted to form a union, and made REI history π. Fast forward to 2023, and it's clear that this was just the opening act. From Chicago's first unionized store to a strike in North Carolina, it seems REI's labor movement is no passing trend.
